Stride

Stride is a team step-challenge app for workplaces: an employer starts a group, members join by link, and everyone's steps appear on one board — day, week, month and all time — alongside a group chat where the ribbing happens. Most step apps count the potholes: a phone in a car or on a boda produces a rhythm a pedometer reads as walking, and a leaderboard built on that is one nobody believes twice. The project required a deep understanding of the domain and a meticulous approach to user experience design. We needed to build something that was not only visually stunning but also incredibly fast and reliable at scale.

Stride uses Android's Activity Recognition API to detect when a user is travelling and subtracts those steps on the device before any total is sent, so only steps you actually walked count — and you can see exactly what was removed and why, on the same screen as your total. It reads step data through Health Connect, sends just one number a day to a Go (Gin) API, and adds streaks, a Monday recap, mystery mode, announcements and admin group controls. Built on the Grit framework and live on Google Play.
